According to the latest Netcraft survey statistics from 1st of February, 2007, Jan Kneschke's little baby lighttpd is showing a steady growth, with currently serving 702712 servers which is a tremendous growth compared to January 2007 (only 172819 servers).

Who uses lighttpd? The homepage names a few:

lighttpd powers several popular Web 2.0 sites like YouTube, wikipedia and meebo. Its high speed io-infrastructure allows them to scale several times better with the same hardware than with alternative webservers.

lighttpd features a "faster FastCGI", a COMET implementation and optimized high-speed features. Furthermore, it's the ideal candidate for scaling out your PHP application (and getting the benefit of a fast download mechanism at no costs compared to Zend Download Server). Applications like Chorizo! or websites like sevenload (video sharing startup in Europe) are using it as their ground base for their high-speed applications.

Just give it a try. If you're bound to Apache, just try using lighttpd as a load-balanced reverse-proxy for scaling out your Apache based applications? Or, separating your file downloads and static images into a lighttpd based powerhouse?

Plazes, European startup (founded by Stefan Kellner), raised EUR 2.7 Mio. from Doughty Hanson Technology Ventures, as reported by Techcrunch. Good to see that European startups become more and more interesting for VCs, and good to see that it's a PHP-based "Web2.0" community. :-) Congratulations to Stefan for this deal.

How did we know that it's based on PHP? Well, that was very easy, just simulating a HTTP request to get the HTTP response headers:

Hitflip, eines der deutschen Social Commerce Startups, veranstaltet eine virale Marketingaktion, "getarnt" als die "Blog-Schnitzeljagd". Das Prinzip ist ganz einfach:

Man schreibt einen eigenen Blogpost zur Blogitzeljagd! Natürlich nicht irgendeinen Post, denn ein bisschen Recherche Jagd soll ja auch dabei sein:

1. Suche den Blogpost von dem Du über die Blogitzeljagd erfahren hast (das ist einfach… oder? *wink*)
2. Suche einen Post über Hitflip in einem wildfremden Blog, der NICHTS mit der Blogitzeljagd zu tun hat und NICHT bereits vom Vorgänger (also da, wo Du von der Blogitzeljagd erfahren hast) gefunden wurde.
3. Suche deinen gewünschten Zusatzpreis (s.o.) im aktuellen Hitflip-Bestand. Bitte darauf achten, dass es manche Produkte in mehrfachen Ausführungen gibt. Hier also möglichst genau sein.

Zu Punkt 1: das ist des Blogposting (naja, eigentlich habe ich per E-Mail von einem der Macher von Hitflip davon erfahren, der mich gebeten hatte, daran teilzunehmen ;-) ).
Punkt 2: als interessante Quelle das Exciting E-Commerce Blog von Jochen Krisch, übrigens generell sehr empfehlenswert! (z.B. der Beitrag "Hitflip: Mit frischem Kapital nach Grossbritannien")
Punkt 3: der gewünschte Zusatzpreis aus dem Hitflip-Programm... mal stöbern... wie wäre es mit "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (2006)" für die Wii?
